I have decided to return to college at Arizona State University. I always wanted to finish my degree, and I have always loved education and learning, so this journey is exciting. My fiancee Sharon is also back in college @ ASU as well, so we are still on this transition into tech together. It's funny because it has been 3 years since we started self learning and taking courses online, and joining Formation. We have learned so much, but as they say, in technology, you never really learn enough, and you have to keep up with the pace. It's something that I really enjoy, so it doesn't feel like work too much. So, the last time I wrote on here, that was the month that I arrived in Austin, so its been a hectic 10 months of adjustment. I am still in love with Austin and I am so glad we moved here. The kids are in a much larger school that challenges them adequetly. Their previous school was nothing close to this new school district. Austin has a real positive vibe and humble scene. Some of the things we have done so far include going on trail walks, swimming at our local pool, working out at our local gym, riding bikes throughout the area, riding bikes through the trail, rode horses, went to see a movie at CineMark... went to the jump park and probably some other adventures that I am leaving out. We still plan to do a lot more, it feels never ending in Austin, there's so much to do.
In tech, so much has been happening... the AI bubble may have just burst according to Bill Gates. The new GPT-5 model did not impress, and honestly I haven't been too impressed with AI since it the buzztalk started, I feel it's over hyped. Paul Allen had a chatbot in the early days of Microsoft very similar to these Chatbots now, just not as technically advanced--however, the same concept. Chatbots are cool, but not that COOL. Companies are doing the right thing by blowing it out of proportion because of the investments being made, so it makes sense. But when ChatGPT underperforms on release day, it's a sign. The image generation and all the other things that 'AI can do' are not that much impressive/impactful/useful, and there were tons of similar tools that could imitate image generation and such. It's funny because most of the AI talk are from folks who have no idea how the underlying technology works, including myself, I am learning still. I am taking a course on AWS about ML/AI Fundamentals.
My classes at ASU go live on August 17th, I have Principles of Programming and English 102 I believe. I did 101 at Toledo my freshman year after high school. I already started College Algebra and it's more like a refresher from the many years ago of high school. I always enjoyed Math so I am moving along pretty quickly. I will learn Java this Fall and do some projects with that. I plan to get my masters degree eventually and possibly transfer to UT Austin. ASU is a top 50 CS school and so is UT Austin, but UT Austin is a lot closer, which would help me with career fairs and networking.
I do not want to bamble on, as you know I like to get my posts TLDR. I am working at UPS as a preloader and my shifts right now start at 4AM, so I have to get to bed soon. It pays the bills. I will soon be in tech, I have lots of more to write about! Stay tuned and thanks for hanging in their with me!
